Healing the Cycle: How Braids Bar Hawaii Rose from the Ashes of My Past

Aloha. My name is Emily Stiller Davidson. Today, I am the proud owner of Braids Bar Hawaii LLC here on Maui. Looking at my life now—blessed with a business that grossed over six figures last year, two beautiful children, and a husband who fiercely loves and supports my every dream—I am overwhelmed by a peace I never thought I’d feel.

But I’m not sharing this to showcase a perfect life. I’m sharing this because for a very long time, my soul was in a state of survival.

If you are currently growing up in the foster system, navigating poverty, or trying to survive environments heavy with trauma, I want you to know something: your current pain is not your final destination. Healing is real, and it is waiting for you.

I grew up in foster home and went through the adoption system.   Welfare and the presence of drugs were the scene of my childhood, it was an emotional weight that lingered every single day. When you grow up surrounded by that kind of brokenness, it can distort how you see yourself. It led me into dark spaces and negative influences throughout my teens and twenties.

For years, I carried the invisible wounds of instability. But even in the moments I felt most lost, I can see now that grace was watching over me.

God gave me two gifts: my love for connecting with people and the art and skill of braiding and protective hairstyling.

Braiding became more than just a hustle; it became my sanctuary. Every time I parted hair, every time I completed a neat, beautiful style, I was putting order to the chaos around me. It was the first place I felt worthy and capable.

Through this craft, the universe opened up opportunities of  abundance for me and my family. But the true blessing wasn't the financial freedom—it was the beginning of my emotional healing.

Turning Success Guilt into Spiritual Purpose

When you start to experience a beautiful life after decades of survival, a different kind of pain can surface: success guilt.

As my business flourished, my heart ached. I looked back at the family and friends I love so deeply, still trapped in the grueling, heavy cycles of generational trauma and financial distress. It felt unfair that I had made it to the other side while they were still hurting.

In that space of deep conflict—weeping tears of gratitude for my blessings, yet feeling a heavy sorrow for those left behind—I fell to my knees in prayer.

And in that quiet place, God met me with a profound healing truth. My success wasn't a reason to feel guilty; it was a assignment. The abundance wasn't meant for me to hoard; it was meant for me to steward.

I felt a heavy, beautiful conviction to teach this craft. I realized that the best way to honor my past and heal my guilt was to reach my hand back down into the trenches and pull others up. I wanted to teach youth how to turn a portable, beautiful skill into their own financial independence and self-worth.

To build this sanctuary for others, I knew I needed a physical home. I prayed for a salon space with a heart full of faith. Just five weeks later, I was handed the keys to the very first physical location of Braids Bar Hawaii LLC.

A Space for Collective Healing

I didn’t open Braids Bar Hawaii just to run a business. I built it to be a lighthouse.

This salon is a space dedicated to breaking generational chains. Braiding is a powerful craft—it is a portable, recession-proof skill that belongs entirely to you. No one can ever take it away from you. But more than that, the process of creating beauty is therapeutic. It teaches patience, focus, and self-belief.

To every young person reading this who feels forgotten by the system or broken by life: I am living proof that you can heal. You can survive the foster system, you can outgrow the trauma of your youth, and you can build a life of absolute abundance.

God did it for me, and the tools are waiting here for you. Let’s heal, grow, and build your future together
